Michigan has lost 50 percent of its historic wetlands, and the Black Tern has lost nearly 99 percent of its state population since 1966.

For birds like the Black Tern—a species that builds its floating nests on wetlands—there is nowhere else to go when wetlands are lost. Protecting and conserving wetlands is key to helping vulnerable species recover.

Last year, while wetlands remained a priority for lawmakers, funding for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to restore and protect wetlands fell short of the historic $3 million investment made in FY25. When birds have healthy wetlands, they thrive and so do our communities. Wetlands are places for birders and communities to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. Healthy wetlands absorb and hold floodwater, help keep drinking water clean and store harmful carbon pollution.
