A Taste of Japanese Summer
August is the heart of summer in Japan.
It’s a season of festivals, family gatherings, warm evenings, and refreshing drinks. Around this time, many people in Japan observe Obon, a traditional season for honoring ancestors and coming together with family. It’s also a time when many people return to their hometowns to reconnect with loved ones.
And when the days are hot, a glass of cold Japanese tea is a refreshing way to cool down.
Cold-Brewed Japanese Tea
Cold brewing is one of our favorite ways to enjoy Japanese tea on hot days.
Mugicha (roasted barley tea) is perhaps the quintessential Japanese summer drink. Naturally caffeine-free with a comforting roasted aroma, it is commonly brewed cold and kept chilled in refrigerators across Japan during the hot summer months.
But mugicha isn't the only Japanese tea that can be enjoyed cold. Cold brewing is a simple way to bring out a tea's smooth, refreshing character. Simply add the tea leaves to cold water, let them steep in the refrigerator for a few hours, and enjoy chilled.
Here are a few of our favorite teas to enjoy cold:
SenchaBright, crisp, and wonderfully refreshing when cold brewed.
KukichaLight and refreshing, with a clean, delicate flavor. Its naturally low bitterness makes kukicha especially enjoyable when cold brewed.
HojichaRoasty and aromatic, hojicha makes a surprisingly refreshing drink when served chilled or over ice.
